President Donald Trump’s latest public appearance has left viewers wondering what’s going on.

Social media investigators continue examining his every step, lean, and unexplained movement in footage from several recent appearances.

Yet recent images have caught Trump leaning on lecterns and moving with what some viewers describe as an uneven gait. Now, another White House moment has viewers zooming in again.

Camera footage caught the 80-year-old appearing to stumble slightly as he approached the podium.

The moment came during a Sept. 17 event in the White House Rose Garden.

Trump quickly recovered before fully tripping.

He then paused and slapped his upper right thigh twice, his motivation tactic, before continuing toward the lectern like he’s done several times before.

Video captured the exact moment “his foot stumbled; he stopped to catch his breath,” said journalist Heather Delaney Reese. She also noticed he “slapped his upper right thigh twice, and slowly made his way to the podium.”

The footage showed it all. Trump entered as Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” blasted through the speakers. Guests watched from tables positioned beneath the Rose Garden’s yellow-and-white umbrellas.

Reese argued that the exchange raised questions about whether Trump is fully fit to serve in the White House and what’s going on with his leg slaps.

“He slaps his thigh frequently. Why?” one person asked. Another wrote, “What’s the deal with a slapping of the thighs and the packing of the railing walking down from the airplanes?”

Trump typically slaps his leg just before going up or down steps, as well as before entering a room. Many wondered if “it’s painful for him” to walk without assistance.

One follower shared a personal theory: “When you have a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack), and it impacts a limb like your leg; it goes numb. I had a TIA. I don’t slap my leg, but I move it /swing it to ‘wake up the nerves.”

Despite this assumption, there has been no verified evidence that Trump experienced a transient ischemic attack or another neurological emergency.

Still, the thigh tapping appeared only days after another video of Trump’s legs went viral.

Footage circulated online on Sept. 18 showing two symmetrical, raised outlines beneath the fabric at the back of Trump’s calves. The video showed him walking through a curtained corridor alongside aides and Secret Service agents.

Social media users proposed several explanations. Some believed the outlines came from compression stockings. Others suggested health-monitoring equipment or ankle-foot orthotics designed to stabilize a person’s gait.

The White House has not identified the objects or confirmed that Trump uses braces or medical devices.

The speculation followed Trump’s Sept. 16 trip to North Carolina, where he campaigned for Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley. Photographs captured the president leaning noticeably forward while speaking with reporters near Air Force One.

Similar concerns surfaced in March when Trump was photographed standing at an angle on the White House South Lawn. Questions returned in July after sweat poured down the side of his face during a lengthy speech in Georgia.

Trump does have a publicly confirmed condition affecting his legs.

In July 2025, his physician announced that tests conducted after the president experienced mild swelling revealed chronic venous insufficiency. The condition occurs when veins have difficulty returning blood from the legs to the heart, allowing blood to pool in the lower extremities.

Trump later told The Wall Street Journal that he briefly tried wearing compression socks to control the swelling but stopped using them.

“I didn’t like them,” he said.

That diagnosis may not necessarily be connected to Trump’s stumble, thigh tapping, forward lean, or the outlines beneath his trousers.

However, the string of unexplained moments has kept his physical condition in the spotlight. It has also led many to wonder whether the 47th president is mentally and physically well to serve in office.
