‘OMG’: Trump’s Kennedy Center Obsession Takes a Nasty Turn as Lawyers Drop Bombshell Over Damage Trump Caused — and It May Explain Demolition Threat
President Donald Trump is determined to add his name back to the historic John F. Kennedy Center.
The 80-year-old MAGA leader’s mission to reshape Washington, D.C., includes rebranding the cultural arts facility built for the 42nd president.
So far, litigation has halted Trump from completing his estimated $250 million overhaul of the center. But the courtroom fight continues.
After returning to the White House in 2025, the president replaced several trustees on the Kennedy Center’s board with his political allies.
The newly appointed, Trump-aligned board formally voted to alter the venue’s name to “The Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts” — a move that sparked immediate legal challenges.
Democratic Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, a former member of the Kennedy Center board, sued the Trump administration over the name change.
In May 2026, a federal judge ordered that the words “Donald J. Trump” be removed from the building’s exterior.
U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that only the U.S. Congress can alter the name of the memorial dedicated to the assassinated 35th President of the United States.
Tarps and scaffolding now cover the front portico of the iconic performing arts center. The structure sits along the Potomac River’s eastern bank. The coverings obscure the main facade and block visitors from seeing the building’s signage.
In a recent court filing, Beatty, 76, accused the administration and its handpicked board of defying a federal court order. She said they were trying to restore Trump’s name to the Kennedy Center’s facade through a newly passed resolution.
Her legal team also said government lawyers failed to dispute claims of panel damage. The damage allegedly occurred while attaching and removing signage. It could permanently mar the historic marble facade.
“Tellingly, Defendants do not dispute that their prior efforts to emblazon the building with President Trump’s name may have irrevocably damaged the center’s historic marble facade,” Beatty’s lawyers argued.

While Trump appears to be on the back foot, Justice Department lawyers warned that the Kennedy Center could be demolished if the courts block the president’s renovation efforts.
Beatty’s attorneys fired back at the Trump administration’s demolition threat.
“Defendants have not-so-subtly said: ‘What a nice Kennedy Center you have here. What a shame should something happen to it,’” her lawyers wrote. “This is a breathtaking assault on the rule of law. It is delusional. And it must stop.”
Social media had plenty to say about the ongoing fight over changing the Kennedy Center’s name. Critics reacted harshly to Trump’s egocentric endeavor.
“Make. Him. Pay. To. Fix. It. His money,” one person on Threads suggested about what should happen with the billionaire Mar-a-Lago resort owner.
Similarly, someone posted, “It’s a facade. Fix it and send him the bill.” A like-minded individual demanded, “Make dumpy Trump pay for a new front for the center!!!”
Another commenter wrote, “Now Trump wants the Kennedy Center to be torn down? What the F**K is wrong with this man? IT’S A MEMORIAL TO AN ASSASSINATED PRESIDENT! Does his pea brain moron not understand this? Please, someone step in here from this administration and wrangle this monster! OMG.
Even if Trump ultimately loses his case to transform the front of the Kennedy Center, the former host of “The Apprentice” seems to have an alternative plan to stamp his name on the performance space.
The Kennedy Center board presented a resolution that would add an inscription at the complex that would read, “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.”
If an endowment fund reaches $100 million, patrons could also see the words “Endowed by the Trump Kennedy Center Fund” at the location.
There’s also another proposal to rename the Kennedy Center grounds “President Donald J. Trump Plaza,” a move that set off a fresh round of online outrage.
