‘Just Beyond Words’: Trump Banned 3 News Outlets Hours After Aide Natalie Harp Showed Him One Clip. Now Her Own Secret Is Coming Out
CNN, MS NOW and Politico are taking President Donald Trump’s White House press ban to court, announcing Monday that they will sue the administration in an effort to regain access after reporters from all three outlets were turned away from the White House over the weekend.
“This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes,” the outlets said in a joint statement, according to the New York Post.
“Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting. Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”
The legal fight adds a new dimension to a press ban that initially looked like another angry salvo from Trump against news organizations he considers hostile to his administration.
But behind the scenes, an unusual sequence of events preceded the president’s decision — including a report that one of his closest aides, Natalie Harp, showed him an MS NOW clip just hours before he announced the ban.
Harp showed Trump the clip as frustrations inside the White House were already mounting over coverage of his second term, according to Mediaite, citing The Wall Street Journal.
That detail has now dovetailed with a separate report raising questions about Harp’s own access to the president and the White House.
MS NOW reported last month that Harp repeatedly declined for more than a year to obtain a routine security clearance, despite working in close proximity to Trump and handling information he receives daily.
Together, the reports have thrust Harp into the middle of Trump’s latest fight with the press — and prompted a fresh round of disbelief about how much influence she has over the president.
Months of Trump’s frustration with media coverage of his second term reached a “fever pitch” after Harp showed him a video of MS NOW criticizing his policies.
Trump announced the ban only hours later.
“Behind the scenes, the president has told aides he doesn’t have enough political allies defending him on television and making the case for his second-term achievements, according to people familiar with the matter,” the Journal reported. “White House spokesman Steven Cheung said Trump’s allies have ‘done an incredible job of getting the message out to voters.’”
Trump announced the bans Friday on Truth Social, accusing the three outlets of “constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” He also accused Politico of benefiting from an $8 million subscription deal made during the Biden administration.
When reporters questioned him about the decision in the Oval Office, Trump repeatedly talked over a reporter who began by reminding him that presidents take an oath to uphold the Constitution, including the First Amendment.
“Yeah, I do too, much more so than you,” Trump sputtered.
When she asked, “How do you justify this?” Trump continued talking over her.
“Because they’re fake news, and you get so tired of reading and seeing fake news. When you look at CNN, it’s just fake. That’s why their ratings are no good. When you look at MSNOW, which used to be MSNBC … it’s fake news. It’s fake news,” he insisted.
As another reporter tried to follow up, Trump cut him off.
“Excuse me, excuse me.”
He later said other news organizations could face the same treatment.
“So, there’s a lot of news. There may be others to join ’em, and maybe they can better, and we’d like to have them back in,” he groused.
The White House began enforcing the ban Saturday, turning away reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico and revoking their credentials.
CNN said the move would not stop its journalists from covering the administration. MS NOW said it intended to defend its First Amendment rights, while Politico said it would “continue to fairly report on this White House and future ones” and “vigorously defend our First Amendment rights against any attempt to restrict them.”
The social media reaction was swift.
“Nothing in that clown show administration is surprising,” one commenter wrote on X.
Another person focused directly on Harp’s reported role in the episode: “Natalie Harp has the power to suspend the First Amendment just by showing Trump mainstream cable TV. This scenario is surreal.”
Then tennis legend Martina Navratilova summed up the broader reaction in three words: “Just beyond words…”
Others took aim at Trump’s immaturity.
“A petulant child,” one said.
Another reaction went straight to the question now surrounding Harp’s influence: “So Natalie Harp is essentially running the country?”
The security clearance report adds another layer to that question.
According to people familiar with the matter, Harp declined multiple times over more than a year to complete the routine process normally required of West Wing staffers. The issue eventually drew concern from the White House counsel’s office and security officials before Trump intervened. Harp then completed the necessary forms and received a clearance, according to one person familiar with the matter.
The report said White House officials had raised several concerns about Harp since Trump returned in January 2025, including her lack of security clearance She operates unusually close to the president and filters much of the information he sees each day.
One national security official said Harp’s proximity gives her access to sensitive information about Trump beyond that of nearly all other senior White House officials.
Harp has become known inside Trump’s orbit as the “Human Printer” because she routinely delivers printouts of favorable news coverage, polling and social media posts directly to the president. That role has previously surfaced during tense moments inside the White House.
Sen. Ted Cruz recently recalled a June 2025 meeting with Trump that was supposed to focus on school choice but quickly shifted after the president was handed a printed copy of an Elon Musk social media post claiming that Trump was in the Jeffrey Epstein files. Cruz said Harp delivered the post.
“He literally reads that tweet,” Cruz recalled, saying Trump’s “knuckles turn white” and that he was “so pissed” that Cruz learned “some curse words” he did not know.
Now, Harp is again at the center of a presidential eruption — only this time, the subject is the press itself.
The Journal reported that one senior White House official privately expressed “exasperation” over Trump’s decision, arguing it would “do little to achieve the president’s goal of improving press coverage.”
