Family, friends, and fans of Samuel Monroe Jr. are mourning his loss, and his family announced on Thursday, Aug. 27, that he passed away. He was 52.

The “Menace II Society” actor’s life was cut short after losing a months-long battle with a severe case of meningitis and MRSA pneumonia.

Monroe Jr. was best known for his roles in “The Player’s Club,” “Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood,” and “Smart Guy,” alongside actor Jason Weaver.

Monroe’s mother, Joyce Patton, announced his death on Facebook. Fans and fellow actors quickly filled the comments with condolences.

Jason Weaver shared a lengthy tribute on Aug. 27, remembering Monroe as both a friend and fellow actor.

Under a black-and-white image of Monroe, he wrote, “Sam… I’m truly saddened to learn about his passing this morning.”

The pair met in the 1990s as young actors trying to break into L.A.’s film and television industry. They later worked together on an episode of “Smart Guy.”

’ll never forget how much fun we all had together back then on set,” said Weaver.

In the episode, which was called “Lab Rats,” Weaver’s younger brother, T.J., uses him as a science subject to study animal behavior.

T.J. tries to help Weaver’s character get the attention of the girl he likes, but the plan goes south when Monroe’s character finds out.

He pretends like the woman is his girl, but she’s actually his friend’s girlfriend.

Weaver described Monroe as a “good guy” and said he enjoyed running into him during auditions or industry events.

He remembered Monroe’s warm embrace and kind words, adding that he had prayed for him during his final months as he battled illness.

“He always had a kind word to share, backed by a warm smile on his face that would let you know that you were talking to a friend,” said Weaver.

The “CHI” actor admitted that he “was aware of the fact that Sam was very sick and fighting for his life for the past few months, but I was praying for him and hoping that he would pull through.”

Weaver ended the caption by saying he was grateful to have known Monroe and prayed that his soul would have peace.

In “The Player’s Club,” Monroe played Junior, the little brother of exotic dancer Ronnie.

Ronnie and Junior were at the center of the film’s most climactic scene, where Junior assaults another dancer during a party attended by Ice Cube and others.

Monroe played key roles in several cult classics from the 1990s. In “House Party 3,” he played Ronnie. He appeared in a climactic party scene involving an assault.

In “Tales from the Hood,” he played one of three friends. They visit a creepy funeral home to rob the director. The friends listen to his horror stories before facing a shocking twist.

Monroe played a smaller supporting role as “Ilena’s cousin” in his first film, “Menace II Society.”

In one memorable scene, he runs out of the house after rounding up his friends in the car to confront the main character, Kane, for getting his cousin pregnant and denying it.

After reminiscing about Weaver’s post, fans flooded his comments with condolences for Monroe and his family.

One person said, “I remember that episode you guys did on ‘Smart Guy.’ RIP.”

Another person quoting Monroe’s character in the episode said, “Stay away from Alina!

A third person typed, “This is so heartbreaking.” A fourth commented, “Smh. No more! It’s enough death already!”

Monroe was one name amongst a list of other celebrities who have died this week. 

Country music singer Dolly Parton passed away at the age of 80 on Tuesday, Aug. 25, following a battle with cancer.

Actor Peter Cullen, who voiced the “Transformers” character Optimus Prime and Eeyore from “Winnie the Pooh, died at age 85 on Aug. 26. 

Lastly, King Harald V of Norway passed away at age 89 on Aug. 28.
