His family says Paris remains in intensive care as doctors prepare for a longer recovery than initially expected.

John Paris is awake, and that alone counts as progress. What comes next will take considerably longer than his family had hoped.

The Earth, Wind & Fire drummer emerged from his induced coma again this week, and this time was stable enough that doctors could conduct a full evaluation, according to an update posted to the Standing for John Paris Facebook page.

Those additional tests produced a difficult verdict: Paris will require two major surgeries, keeping him in intensive care well beyond the timeline his loved ones had anticipated.

His wife, Kathy Merrick, framed the situation with clear-eyed realism rather than false optimism. “This journey is definitely a marathon, but JP is fighting every single day and our hope is strong,” she shared in the update, per TMZ.

Paris suffered the medical emergency earlier this month and was placed in a medically induced coma at the hospital. The specific nature of the emergency has not been publicly detailed by the family.

The news tempers a more upbeat assessment offered days earlier by bandmate Ralph Johnson, who told TMZ over the weekend that Paris was “gonna be fine.” That optimism may still prove accurate in the long run, but the road there now includes two operations and a longer stretch in the ICU.

Paris has anchored the rhythm section for one of the most influential acts in American music, a group whose catalog remains foundational to soul, funk and R&B across generations.

The band has continued touring in recent years, including a current run alongside Lionel Richie, making the drummer’s absence keenly felt both onstage and among a fanbase that has followed the group for decades.

For now, the family appears focused on steady updates rather than predictions, with the Facebook page serving as their primary channel for keeping supporters informed. Their message throughout has centered less on a timeline and more on the fight itself, which by their account, Paris is very much still in.
