Daughter Wanted to Celebrate Her 80-Year-Old Mom In a Big Way — You Won’t Believe What Happened After She Tagged Coco Gauff
Atlanta-area resident Roberta Eaton had already decided she would make it to the Cincinnati Open next year.
She just did not expect to get there for her 80th birthday on Sept 6. or to end up meeting her favorite player, Coco Gauff, after a match.
The grandmother’s reaction during a birthday trip became an unexpected viral moment after her daughter, N’Jeri Eaton, posted online asking for help getting her mother to a tennis tournament.
What started as a family effort to give Roberta something special after a difficult year eventually led to a stranger giving her courtside seats.
It also led to a personal meeting with Gauff and a memory Roberta says she will carry for the rest of her life.
Roberta, who has followed tennis since she was in her 20s, had spent much of the past year caring for her husband after he suffered sepsis and a subsequent brain injury.
She was also dealing with a second bout of breast cancer, two decades after overcoming the disease the first time.
In an interview, N’Jeri told Atlanta Black Star that she wanted to give her mother a birthday celebration comparable to the one the family had arranged when her father turned 80.
Roberta will turn 80 on September 6, but finding the right gift proved difficult since Roberta doesn’t enjoy being the center of attention.
But N’Jeri realized there was one thing her mother would happily travel for: tennis.
“I was like, what does she care about? Politics and the news, that’s not going to be a present. And tennis, especially tennis,” N’Jeri said.
She initially considered sending Roberta to the U.S. Open in New York, which coincided with her birthday. But the cost of tickets, travel and lodging made the trip difficult.
“So I posted on Threads, like, hey, can anyone help me get tickets?” N’Jeri recalled. She explained that she felt her mother deserved more than she could afford to give her, particularly after the family’s difficult year.
A friend suggested looking at smaller tournaments, where tickets were more affordable and seats could offer a better view. That led N’Jeri to Cincinnati.
“I just need to like figure out how to get her there,” she recalled.
The plan came together with help from N’Jeri’s brother and Cincinnati-based cousin and his wife.
One evening, they surprised Roberta at home, where she thought they were simply stopping by to eat—then handed her Cincinnati Open tickets hidden inside a Gauff-themed Wheaties box.
“I was beyond happy,” Roberta said.
The surprise was particularly meaningful because Roberta had already made plans in her head to attend the tournament the following year.
“I had already recognized that, oh, that’s the closest one to me. If I wanted to, I could drive there by myself,” she said. “And I said, but I will be there next year.”
She had no idea her daughter was also documenting the process online. Roberta said she would have objected had she known N’Jeri planned to share the video publicly.
“I just thought she was going to, you know, put it on the family little chat,” Roberta said. “But the next thing I knew, I mean…this thing had ballooned.”
The trip became even more meaningful because of Roberta’s longtime admiration for Gauff.
Her love of tennis began decades ago. She once tried playing herself, even buying “The Inner Game of Tennis” book and putting together the appropriate tennis outfits and accessories.
But she eventually realized that playing the sport was not her strength. Watching it was another story.
Roberta grew up admiring Arthur Ashe and later followed Serena and Venus Williams. But Gauff became a particular favorite after Roberta watched the young player face Naomi Osaka early in her career.
Roberta remembered seeing Gauff cry after losing and watching Osaka comfort her.
“I could just tell that she was going to be somebody who was going to be determined,” Roberta said.
Since then, she has made a point of watching Gauff whenever she plays.
“I’ve never missed any game that she’s played in,” Roberta said, explaining that she will even listen through headphones while cooking so she does not miss a match.
That devotion led her daughter to share their story publicly.
N’Jeri posted about the trip expecting that the response might help them secure a special keepsake from Gauff. Instead, the post reached far more people than she anticipated.
“I had no idea,” N’Jeri said of the response. “I know my mom is the best. I’m deeply grateful for it but also at the same time it’s not surprising because as much as Coco has this glow of someone who really is beautiful inside out, I think my mom has that too. So it’s gratifying to see that other people are seeing that now too.”
She said she initially hoped the post might simply lead to a signed item or another small gesture from Gauff. The experience far exceeded that, as people came together to give Roberta the experience of a lifetime.
“One of those people” who became invested in the story was a Cincinnati woman named Kate, who had her own reason for connecting with Roberta’s story: Kate’s father had recently turned 80.
Kate spotted Roberta and N’Jeri’s cousin sitting farther up in the stands and invited them to join her in her premium seats. N’Jeri said she did not even know her mother had moved until her brother called and told her he could see Roberta sitting directly behind Gauff’s opponent.
Roberta remembers following Kate without hesitation because she believed Gauff had arranged for someone to find her after the match.
After Gauff’s victory, Kate began calling out to the tennis star. Roberta joined her, and Gauff eventually returned with her racket to meet her superfan. The two shared a heartwarming embrace and then the people around couldn’t resist the moment.
“She was just most gracious,” Roberta said. “And she had the biggest smile. And I could tell that her heart was just as big.”
The encounter left Roberta emotional.
“Meeting Coco was like…was just pure joy. And my heart was just… I mean, it was just pumping. It was just pumping a mile a minute,” she said.
She also admitted that she got caught up in the moment and her “grandma” instincts kicked in.
“And I have grandchildren her age, right? So then I found myself putting my hand on her face. I said to myself, when I went back to the hotel, why did you touch her face?” Roberta said. “I’m just saying, well, just let her know how much you love her.”
Gauff later shared photos from the encounter and posted her own message to Roberta.
“Glad I was able to meet her! So happy I could bring her a little bit of joy, her spirit is everything! God bless! I hope I look like her when I ‘m 80, I thought the shirt was a lie haha. She’s gorgeous!” Gauff wrote.
For Roberta, however, the weekend represented more than meeting a celebrity.
She has been caring for her husband since Jan. 25, 2025, after he survived sepsis and later suffered a brain injury. The experience left her focused primarily on others’ needs, making the Cincinnati trip an unexpected source of relief.
“I didn’t recognize until it happened just how much I must have needed it,” Roberta said. “So this was something that brought about immediate and major relief. Because I’m the kind that is always looking out for what the other person needs. Like a lot of women, we generally put ourselves at the very bottom of the bucket list.”
She said that’s been the case for her. Her children had remained steadfast throughout the family’s difficult period, and the trip gave her an opportunity to simply enjoy herself.
For N’Jeri, the overwhelming response to her post offered its own lesson. She said she was struck by how many strangers wanted something good to happen for her mother.
“I think I needed that reminder that, um, times like great kind of political and cultural division we’re actually not that divided,” N’Jeri said. “A lot of people see good in each other and recognize good and want good things to happen.”
The response became so personal that strangers even sent Roberta money through Venmo to help her purchase food, drinks or souvenirs during the trip.
“They didn’t know me, and I certainly didn’t know them,” Roberta said. She added that she had been trying to respond to as many people as possible because she was grateful for the kindness.
