K. Michelle is finally releasing the country album she was told she couldn’t make
The singer’s long-awaited “Jesus & Whiskey” arrives this fall, marking a homecoming decades in the making.
K. Michelle is done letting the music industry put her in a box.
After years of fighting to record the country music closest to her heart, the Memphis-born singer and “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star has announced her debut country album, “Jesus & Whiskey.” The project is scheduled to arrive Oct. 16, with its title track available now.
“Being a Tennessee girl, [country] is my first genre of choice, and I was always told because of other reasons, I couldn’t sing that,” Michelle told People, describing the album as the fulfillment of a dream she has carried throughout her career. “When it came down to it, I am a country singer. It’s new to the world, but to everyone around me, they know it’s my whole life, so it’s time to do what it is I do, and I’m really excited about it.”
Although many listeners know Michelle best for the unfiltered R&B songs that made her a star, country music is not a sudden pivot for the classically trained vocalist. She grew up listening to and performing the genre, and has spent years incorporating elements of country music into her projects and live performances.
Still, Michelle said previous record labels repeatedly steered her toward R&B because of the country music industry’s climate at the time. The result was six R&B studio albums — including her 2013 debut, “Rebellious Soul,” and 2023’s “I’m the Problem” — before she was finally able to pursue the sound she had wanted all along.
“I’m not an artist doing a country album. I’m a country artist. And it’s just amazing to see people go pull up old work and even hear the R&B albums, and they would tell me then, ‘She sounds like a country singer. Why isn’t she?’” Michelle told People.
Her path toward Nashville became more official in 2024, when she signed with BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville to release her debut country album. By then, Michelle had already offered glimpses of what the transition might sound like. In 2023, she joined Jelly Roll and the Fisk Jubilee Singers on a rendition of the Judds’ “Love Can Build a Bridge” for the tribute album “A Tribute to the Judds.” Michelle and Jelly Roll later performed the song at the 57th annual CMA Awards.
In 2025, she released “Jack Daniel’s,” a dramatic, twangy single built around the powerhouse vocals and emotional candor her fans have come to expect.
For Michelle, “Jesus & Whiskey” appears to be about more than changing genres. The album represents a decision to trust herself after years of being told that her talent, background and identity belonged in one narrowly defined lane.
She explained that the project’s cover — which depicts one version of the singer watering another — symbolizes the work of encouraging and nurturing herself through a long and sometimes frightening process.
“I’m watering myself,” she told People. “I’ve had to dig into myself. I’ve had to hype myself up.”
Produced by Kristian Bush of Sugarland fame, K. Michelle acknowledges the nine-song album has been a long time coming but says there truly is no better time to launch “Jesus & Whiskey.”
“I’ve just wanted my album to be perfect. Kristian Bush I’ve known over six years, and he’s [always] been supportive of what I’ve been doing,” she says. “So it’s all coming full circle, and I just felt like I was taking my time, and I wanted to put it out when it was right. I didn’t want to rush it.”
“Jesus & Whiskey” is scheduled for release on October 16. “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” season 17 finale airs Sunday, August 2 at 8 pm EST on Bravo and streams the next day on Peacock.
