‘I Started Off Writing’: Snoop Dogg Reveals He’s At a Point In His Career Where It’s Okay for Him to Have Other Artists Write for Him
Snoop Dogg has been in the game since the early ’90s and is known for his g-funk rapping and writing skills. Make no mistake: Though Snoop is well acclimated in the rap industry, he still prides himself on the power of collaboration and allowing others to help enhance his craft with their writing abilities.
In his newest project, “BODR,” Snoop Dogg collaborated with up-and-coming artists such as Jane Handcock, Nerfertitti Avanni and more. Young rapper Cordae also worked with the “Doggfather,” and even wrote bars for the song, “We Don’t Gotta Worry No More” featuring Wiz Khalifa.

While discussing his most recent Netflix film, Day Shift, on the Rap Radar Podcast, the California native gave insight on why he’s so open to allowing other artists to write for him, an act that rappers typically look down on.
“Sometimes you gotta put yourself in the frame of letting somebody else depict a better picture for you because you can’t see everything.”
Snoop Dogg revealed although he is a rapper, he started off writing and even wrote for high-profile rappers, including one of his closest friends in the game and long-time business partner, Dr. Dre.
“I started off writing,” the Death Row rapper said. He continued, “What would I be if I wouldn’t allow somebody to write for me?”
He explained his sentiments around the beauty in allowing others to write for an individual.
“I feel like Whitney Houston’s best record was ‘The Bodyguard.’ When other people came in and gave her records that weren’t hers but she just could just sit back and just sing and they embodied what they thought she should be.”
The “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper also noted that at this stage in his career, his writing skills do not have to be questioned because he’s had the opportunity to do it all. All of his experiences have allowed him to give other artists the same opportunity he was presented.
“That’s to the point in my career where I’m at now where I’ve written so many hit records to where it’s not about what I can write sometimes. It’s about what I can’t see that somebody else can write for me.”
