‘Humbled and honored’: Tami Roman hits back at critics as she becomes an honorary member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority
Roman joins 20 other notable Black women to be named honorary members of Sigma Gamma Rho following their annual boule.
As various sororities continue to codify honorary members as sisters this summer, one of the newest members of Sigma Gamma Rho is reminding people that her journey was not linear.
Tami Roman, who has done it all from reality television with “The Real World” and “Basketball Wives” to scripted series like “The Ms. Pat Show,” was among 21 women who were announced as honorary members of the proud sorority during its boule in Tampa, Florida, on Friday. Roman, who is also a mental health advocate, took to Threads, thankful for the sisterhood of SGRho, while also hitting back at anyone who may have something to say about her being part of the prestigious sorority.
“My journey didn’t include the college experience, but I’m grateful the sisterhood of a sorority didn’t pass me by,” she wrote. “I’m truly humbled and honored to be an honorary member of Sigma Gamma Rho!”
In a graphic attached to the post, she shared a message saying, “Somebody, somewhere doesn’t think this was a good idea. Somebody, somewhere can discuss their concerns with God about his plans for ME. In the meantime …. EEEEEEEYIP!”

In recent weeks, other sororities such as Alpha Kappa Alpha and Zeta Phi Beta announced their honorary members. On July 11, the Zetas welcomed Niecy Nash-Betts, Shelia E., Cheryl “Coko” Gamble of SWV, Elise Neal, U.S. Rep Lateefah Simon and Tennessee State Rep. Karen D. Camper to the esteemed sorority. During its 72nd international boule earlier this month, the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha welcomed Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett-Helaire, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Pauletta Pearson Washington, Merline Saintil and Robin Washington.
“Today, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® welcomed six women whose influence extends far beyond their names,” read the sorority’s post on Instagram. “They are scientists, innovators, artists, executives, and visionaries whose work has changed industries, opened doors, and created lasting impact. Not just trending. Transformational. Not just accomplished. Enduring. Not just recognized. Respected.”
