‘He Admits It’: Trump Quietly Changes His Story, Admits Who Really Caused the Damage at the Reflecting Pool—Then Makes One Move That Has Critics Raising Eyebrows
President Donald Trump made a rare admission about the damage and destruction in Washington.
Trump, 80, is eating humble pie over his Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovations after previously touting his “beautification” plan.
In early 2026, Trump claimed he would upgrade the popular tourist site located on the National Mall. Instead, the project has brought lies, tarps and confusion.
Originally estimated at nearly $2 million and two weeks, the project has ballooned toward $15 million after three months.
Trump’s Interior Department drained the pool so no-bid contractors with ties to him could coat its bottom “American flag blue.”
Once filled with water, the blue lining started peeling from the pool’s floor and floating to the top. Around the same time, large algae blooms turned the pool’s water a murky green color.
Trump initially blamed vandals for supposedly cutting a 350-foot gash in the Reflecting Pool lining, which led to U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro, 75, charging multiple people with crimes.
However, Pirro was forced to drop the charges. Federal prosecutors acknowledged the failures were the result of a “botched installation” and the administration speeding through the project.
Trump erupted after losing the legal fight, accusing Pirro of “folding like an umbrella” while repeating his baseless vandalism claims.
Trump remains determined to point the finger at saboteurs. He later softened his accusatory rhetoric in an Aug. 9 Truth Social post.
“There was substantial other damage to the Reflecting Pool, also, but unfortunately, there is no video or proof, other than the damage itself,” he wrote.
He added, “As with many jobs, there was also some contractor error done by rushing the job for a July 4th opening, but it was a very small area of this massive pool, and was relatively inconsequential.”
Chain fences and dark tarps once surrounded the re-drained Reflecting Pool after the Independence Day fireworks celebrations in July, fueling speculation that Trump regrets the failed makeover.
Trump claims security cameras now monitor the 2,000-foot landmark to catch future malicious mischief.
Critics quickly pounced after he admitted his contractor was partly to blame for the bungled overhaul.
“So, he admits his contractor screwed it up, and there was no vandalism, but he’s putting up security cameras around the pool now. For what, I ask?” wondered one Threads user.
A second person declared, “He is always wrong. Always lying.”
Authorities arrested Olympian David O’Hearn and several others for allegedly touching the Reflecting Pool. O’Hearn pleaded not guilty and insisted the damage was already there.
Some say the arrest damaged his reputation, and he deserves more than an apology. “Defamation lawsuit incoming,” one person wrote.

“Isn’t it ironic a narcissist is losing the battle to a reflection pool,” another individual proposed. Another faultfinder said, “Trump is delusional!”
The jokes wrote themselves as many leaned into the irony that Trump admitted the reality of what came from the people he hired.
One X user jokingly asked, “Vandals with an invoice?” Another poster stated, “He knew damn well and had innocent people arrested and charged.”
Over on TikTok, a shocked commenter posted, “What? I don’t believe it. He’s never admitted to any error.”
Since returning to the presidency in 2025, Trump has spent a lot of his political capital and the federal government’s taxpayer money remaking the nation’s capital in his image.
Like his mishandled Reflecting Pool plan, the president’s various construction projects across the city have endured online ridicule and court challenges.
In particular, the destruction of the White House East Room in order to build an estimated $600 million luxury ballroom has become another major public relations nightmare for the administration.
