‘Gwurllllllll Why You On This App Lying Like This’:Tamar Braxton Declines Doing a ‘Verzuz’ Battle with K. Michelle, and Here’s Why
Tamar Braxton and K. Michelle fans want the two songstresses to go head to head in the next “Verzuz” battle, but Braxton is not here for it at all.
On the night of Jan. 21, as Ashanti and Keyshia Cole were doing their long-awaited battle, a fan took to social media to tweet, “@verzuzonline Go ahead and start up the @kmichelle vs @TamarBraxtonHer battle going.”
Braxton came across the tweet and decided to respond. She wrote, “Absolutely not I only have 7top ten records. & 4 Grammy nominations. Let me win a few of them first and then double my hits.” Verzuz requires each party to play 20 of what they believe are their best hits or songs, which is why Braxton feels she is not currently ready for the battle.
But it seems some fans did not care to see “The One” singer downplay herself, and they took the time to remind her of who she is.
One person wrote, “Tamar pls don’t act like you don’t have SONGS! Even from way back when sis you really could fckn eat by yourself tbh don’t ever down play.”
Another tweeted, “Gwurllllllll why you this app lying like this?! You have bops from every album! INCLUDING the self titled!”
After one fan made a list of songs the Grammy-nominated singer could use, another fan responded, “Now I love Tamar but you & I both know only her fans know all these songs. Also, how could you leave off Pieces sir.”
However, Braxton not having enough hits is the least of her issues. The biggest issue of all is that Braxton and Michelle have been feuding for years. It began after season 1 of “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” when Michelle told cast member Rasheeda Frost that her ex-boyfriend the music producer Mickey “Memphitz” Wright physically abused her. Braxton was friends with Toya Johnson, who, at the time, was married to Memphitz, and she suggested that Michelle was not telling the truth. They subtweeted each other back and forth for a while over the claim.
Fans thought the beef was over when the two shared a stage at the BET awards in 2015, where they joined Patti Labelle and hugged after singing “If Only You Knew.” But it was sparked again last year when Braxton was asked by TV personality TS Madison if she would do a “Verzuz” with K. Michelle, and Braxton did not answer. Michelle responded with an Instagram Live video accusing Braxton of sleeping with Jermaine Dupri’s father, who was a married man.
“Verzuz” has been a platform that has not only brought good music to fans during a pandemic, but it has also been a place where artists that once would never set foot in the same room as each other can come together and resolve their beefs, such as Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy, and Brandy and Monica. So there is hope that the two divas may be able to push past their differences for the fans.
