‘It Was Very Scary’: ‘RHOA’ Star Nene Leakes Speaks Out After Her 23-Year-Old Son Brentt Suffers a Heart Attack and Stroke
Nene Leakes‘ fans are sending prayers to the former “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” star and her son Brentt Leakes after news began circulating online that the 23-year-old reportedly suffered a heart attack and a stroke. Nene shares Brentt with her late husband, Gregg Leakes.
According to TMZ, a close source to the Leakes family revealed that the incident happened earlier this month when Brentt was in Atlanta. Although there were no additional details regarding what could have brought on the heart attack and stroke, the source shared that Brentt was immediately “transported to the local hospital for medical attention.”
Other sources told the news outlet that Brentt was hospitalized for several days and has since been released. Those sources also indicated that Brentt is going through rehab treatment, and is expected to make a full recovery.
As the news began making its rounds on social media blogs, many fans sent well-wishes to son and mom. At the same time, several people expressed how badly they felt for the former reality star and Brentt because of the hardships they faced following Gregg Leakes’ death last year. Gregg, who was battling colon cancer for years, succumbed to the disease on Sept. 1, 2021.
“What the f–k. I hope he’s okay. She’s been going through a lot in her personal life recently.”
“Omgggg prayers she’s taking hit after hit.”
“Lord Nene can’t catch a break. I’m praying girl. This is crazy. He’s so young.”
“OMG This woman has gone through some stuff. Prayers for the Family.”
“He’s so young. Prayers for his healing and his family’s mental. Sending my love & strength to @neneleakes.”
Among the previous responses, others claimed that Brentt’s heart attack and stroke could have been due to him stressing over the loss of his father. One wrote, “So sad he’s probably stressing from the loss of his father. I pray that God heals him and his family that’s so sad he’s so young.”
Another said, “I’m sure the stress of losing his father had a hand in it. I’m glad he was able to get medical attention fast.”
Hours after news brought about her son’s health, Nene took to her Instagram Story to inform her followers about Brentt’s current condition and what happened.
The 54-year-old said, “Hey, guys, how are you? So obviously I’ve gotten tons of texts messages, tons of emails, everybody’s asking and concerned about Brentt and we thank you guys so much. This is not the way I wanted to come out. We wanted to be able to talk about ourselves when Brentt was in a better place… I would rather the correct thing be out there than something that’s not correct.”
Nene continued the conversation by revealing that Brentt suffered congestive heart failure and a stroke two weeks prior.
She said, “Two weeks ago today Brentt had congestive heart failure and a stroke. He’s only 23 so he’s really young for something like that to happen to him.”
Nene continued, “The first thing a lot of doctors think of when someone that age comes in with that kind of condition is maybe they’ve done drugs or maybe they have serious infection, maybe HIV some sort of infection is what I’m being told by the doctors.”
Further in the conversation, Nene revealed that her son doesn’t drink or do drugs and has been tested negative for the infections. The entrepreneur added that the other option that doctors suggested could have contributed to Brentt’s health issues was COVID-19.
She said, “They were thinking that maybe he caught COVID and he didn’t know he had COVID. The doctors said were saying they did see some things like that if they caught the delta variant … They have run a number of tests on him to see what could’ve possibly made this happen to him. We are still trying to figure it out. Because if we knew the cause, obviously they could treat the cause.”
At the end of the Instagram Story, a visibly emotional Nene opened up about Brentt’s current condition. She said, “It was very scary. I don’t want to go into details of what happened…Obviously a stroke is a very serious thing. He’s struggling with speaking. I don’t know. I just know that keep us in your prayers. Keep Brentt in your prayers.”
