Serena Williams Opens Up About Three-Year-Old Daughter Calling Her ‘Serena,’ Says She Doesn’t Know How She Learned It
Serena Williams’ three-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., is right at the age where she is curious about everything, expanding her verbal skills, and learning more about the world. However, Williams recently revealed a new thing her daughter has learned that she can’t get her to stop doing, and that is say her mommy’s name.
While speaking with reporters during the WTA Tour, Williams said that her toddler is starting to learn just who her mother is to the rest of the world.
Williams said, “I know she knows I play tennis, and I know she knows my name. It’s really weird. She’ll be, like, ‘Serena.’ ” That leads to the question ” ‘How do you know my name is Serena?’ from Mommy to daughter. “Or she’ll see me on TV and either say ‘Mama’ or ‘Serena.’ I’m like, ‘You can’t say ‘Serena; you have to call me Mama.’ It’s really weird, I don’t know what’s going on in her little head.”
Apparently, Alexis is starting to realize that her mother not only plays tennis, but is also famous for doing it, and is a champion. Williams added, “She knows something’s up. People like ask for autographs or get super excited and she’s like, They’re here for Serena. So she knows something. I just don’t know what.”
Last month, Williams shared that her daughter is now taking tennis lessons. She said getting her involved with tennis was the “only thing we could do that’s socially distant.”
Williams welcomed her daughter with her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, in September 2017. She later revealed that she experienced complications shortly after giving birth. The 23-time Grand Slam winner has a history of blood clots and takes blood thinners every day as a result of it, but ceased taking them after her C-section. She stayed in the hospital for another six-day procedure to take care of clots in her lung.
Alexis Ohanian Jr. is the couple’s first and only child.
