‘What an Incredible Honor’: Chadwick Boseman Receives First Emmy Nomination for His Role as Black Panther’s T’Challa In Marvel’s Animated Series
Congratulations are in order to the late Chadwick Boseman, who has received a posthumous Emmy nomination for his “Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance” as Black Panther’s T’Challa in the animated superhero series, “What If…?”
The series followed various heroes from the Marvel universe and switched up the focus of important events that took place in different ways. Several Marvel actors renewed their roles for this animation project, Boseman being one of them.

Vulture Magazine reported, “The Disney+ animated series marks Boseman’s last performance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He recorded the show’s second episode, ‘What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord,’ prior to his untimely death from colon cancer in August 2020.”
The Emmy 2022 nominees were announced Tuesday, July 12, and it was announced Boseman was one out of seven individuals to be placed in this category.
This is Chadwick’s first Emmy nomination, and his team made sure to post their excitement and gratitude for it on his social media accounts.
His team wrote, “What an incredible honor! Thank you to the @televisionacad for Chad’s posthumous #Emmys nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over for his role as T’Challa in the animated series #Whatif…? From @DisneyPlus and @MarvelStudios,” and uploaded the heartfelt message on the actor’s Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Since his death, Boseman has received a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role after his portrayal of Levee Green in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
The “Get On Up” actor also received two SAG nominations in 2021 for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Actor in a Supporting Role as well as a Golden Globe nomination and win for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman, accepted the Golden Globe award on his behalf during the February 2021 ceremony.
Addressing the audience by remote, the widow was holding back tears on her couch in a beautiful gold gown as she spoke: “He would thank God, he would thank his parents, he would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices. He would thank his incredible team.”
She continued, “He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you, you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing in this moment.”
Simon ended by saying, “And honey, you keep them coming. Thank you.”
