‘A Strange Loop,’ ‘MJ The Musical,’ ‘for colored girls,’ dominate 2022 Tony Award nominations
‘A Strange Loop’ leads all productions with 11 nominations, while ‘MJ’ earns 10 and ‘for colored girls’ gets seven.
The nominees for the 2022 Tony Awards have been announced.
This year’s nominations are dominated by the musicals A Strange Loop and MJ The Musical, with 11 and 10 nominations respectively. Nominations for A Strange Loop, the Pulitzer Prize-winning production about a Black, queer writer, include Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score Written, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for a Music for Jaquel Spivey, and Best Direction of a Musical for Stephen Bracket.
Michael R. Jackson wrote the book, music, and lyrics for A Strange Loop, which will match up with another Michael Jackson in several categories.
MJ The Musical, the jukebox musical about the late King of Pop, will go up against A Strange Loop for Best Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Musical for Myles Frost, Best Direction of a Musical for Christopher Wheeldon, and Best Book for a Musical.
The Broadway revival of Ntozake Shange’s famous choreopoem, for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, is up for seven nominations. Camille A. Brown received nods for both Best Direction of a Play and Best Choreography. The show is also nominated for Best Revival of a Play.
The 2022 Tony Awards will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 12 at 8 p.m. with the ceremony airing live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+
