Biden’s campaign says that if he is elected his first order of business is to sign an executive order to reunite 545 immigrant children separated from their families, according to CNN.
“On his first day as president, Joe Biden will issue an executive order creating a federal task force to reunite these children with their parents,” the narrator says in a digital ad for Biden which is airing in Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Florida.
“This is an issue that has had a profound impact on the vice president,” said Cristobal Alex of the Biden campaign while on a call with reporters per CNN. “The centerpiece and core focus on Joe Biden’s immigration policy is family unification.”
Alex adds the initiative is a “top priority” for Biden. The vice president also spoke about children being separated from their parents at the final presidential debate.
“Their kids were ripped from their arms and separated, and now they cannot find over 500 of the sets of those parents, and those kids are alone. Nowhere to go. Nowhere to go. It’s criminal. It’s criminal,” said Biden.
But according to Trump, reuniting the families is very complicated. At the debate, he said, “a lot of these kids come out without the parents. They come over through cartels and through coyotes and through gangs.”
According to a filing by the Justice Department and the American Civil Liberties Union earlier this month, lawyers who have been working on reconnecting the families are having a hard time finding the parents of 545 children who were separated by US border officials between 2017 and 2018, per CNN.
